Software for Digital photo enhancing
Is there an opinion as to what Digital Software is the best for all around versatility in
correcting, enhancing Digital photo's?
I've heard of Photoshop CS2, Adobe Creative Suites Premium and others but out of all of
them what is considered Best , Good , Fair , Poor ?
RE:
Photoshop is the undisputed champ here, but if you are just starting out, Photoshop
Elements will save you a lot of money and do pretty much everything a digital photographer
could want (using the same tools found in PS). If you master layers and advanced photo
editing, then Photoshop will be a pleasure to upgrade to. If you don't master those
things...Photoshop will be a huge waste of money...IMO.
Important photo-editing software features
Here's what pros say to look for when choosing a photo editor:
Check the system requirements. Some software can be notoriously large, requiring up to
700MB of hard disk space. Most also require an up-to-date operating system like Windows XP
or Mac OS X. Check our Comparison Chart for system requirements.
Look for the right level of handholding. If you're a beginner, you'll want a program that
walks you through basic editing tasks, such as removing red-eye or cropping pictures. The
best programs have two modes -- one for novices and one for experts -- so that once you've
learned the basics you can proceed however you want.
Templates make simple projects super-fast. The fun part of photo editing on your PC is all
the projects you can tackle, from creating greeting cards to faking magazine covers. Look
for software that comes with lots of project templates.
The more tools the better. Consumer Reports states in their roundup, "As a rule, the
more features, the more versatile the software." Look for programs with a wide
variety of tools, although be sure to balance this with ease of use and learning
curve.
Make sure the program lets you import and export a wide range of file formats. The most
common are BMP, TIF, GIF, PICT, EPS and JPEG files. Many photo editors also support RAW
image files. This file format is used mainly by professionals and enthusiasts. RAW files
are very large and contain the most uncompressed photo data.
Look for Web integration. The new generation of photo editors lets you save your digital
photos in Web format, e-mail them to friends, and post them online so distant family
members can peek at your latest snapshots.
Taking Pictures to your photo editor
If you have a camera which takes regular film, take the pictures you need and when you're
ready to have the film developed, check the area of the film deposit form which asks
"PhotoDisk" or "JPEG images on disk." When you retrieve your film you
will also receive a floppy disk with JPEG files of your pictures. These disks can be
inserted into Macintosh or Windows machines and the files viewed onscreen.
Because they are intended for screen viewing, the resolution of these JPEG images is at
the 72 to 95 dots-per-inch required for web images.
You will need to copy the images you want on your web site to the hard drive of your
computer so you can more easily edit them later. You probably will also want to rename the
files to something more meaningful than the "image1.jpg, image2.jpg" filenames
that these disks typically use.
Some of the photofinishers as well as Kodak in some locations also offer a service where
JPEG copies of your pictures are sent to a special AOL location where you can view them.
If this is more convenient for you, use this service.
If you have a digital camera you're already familiar with taking digital images and
copying them to your hard drive. When you take pictures with your digital camera and
intend on them to be used on your website, set the camera resolution to it's lowest
resolution rather than its highest, which is intended for printing on photo-quality print
paper.
If you have a digital camera, you probably are already experienced in transferring camera
images to your computer hard drive. The only trick to keep in mind when using digital
cameras for photographing people, scenes or items for the web, is to use the lowest camera
resolution. You will be able to store more photos in the camera and the resolution of the
pictures you take will be pretty close to ideal for use on the web.
